Ann’s story, there’s light at the end of the tunnel

Hi, my name is Ann. I am 50 years old, a divorced mother of three, and I feel like I am completely overwhelmed. I am a Graphic Designer working from home in my small house in Coon Rapids, MN, within Anoka County, and I have hit my breaking point.

My mom, Eleanor, is 82, and she has been living with me for the past three years. She has moderate-stage Alzheimer’s, and my life has become a whirlwind of exhaustion, guilt, and overwhelming stress. I don't have a social life, I have no work-life balance, and I feel isolated. I’m constantly juggling her endless appointments with my own deadlines, and I often feel no control over our daily life.

Eleanor was a dedicated elementary school teacher, a strong woman who used to love gardening and reading novels. Now, the woman I know is gone. I am watching my mother disappear, and I feel so much grief. She is dealing with severe memory loss, and I am living in a state of constant anxiety.

My home has turned into a prison. I am facing the brunt of six major challenges with her. First is the constant repetition; she asks me the same questions every three minutes. Second is aggression—she often accuses me of stealing her purse, and she has lashed out at me, breaking my heart. Third is up odd hours; she is awake at 3:00 AM, pacing the hallways, which leaves me with severe sleep deprivation. Fourth is her forgetfulness; she leaves the stove on, which creates extreme safety issues. Fifth, she requires a walker. Lastly, she is dress dependent, as she can no longer pick out clothes, let alone dress herself.

I am absolutely drained. I have no time for myself, and I feel a deep sense of regret for waiting to take action. I only wish I had known this adult day care (ADC) existed years ago.

Taking Action: Finding Hope
I was scrolling through my computer, completely exhausted and on the verge of a mental breakdown, when I researched my options. I was looking into the Elderly Waiver, CADI, and private pay, trying to see if there was a way to afford help. I wanted somewhere safe for her, but I didn't want a nursing home.

I found Renaissance Adult Day Care, and I realized I had to act immediately because I was at the breaking point. I looked at their Coon Rapids location (55433), which is close to me. They also have an Eagan location (55121), which I noticed helps families in the southern cities.

I saw they had immediate openings, and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t done this sooner. I immediately went to their site, renadultday.com, and filled out the enrollment form.

I knew this was the right choice. My mother needs more engagement, and I need to regain my sanity. Renaissance is more than just a place to sit; it is a community. They offer structured daily support, a safe and secure environment for people with dementia, and nutritious, catered meals (morning snack, lunch, and an afternoon snack). They offer medication reminders and a variety of enrichment activities, including cognitive games, musical therapy, and arts and crafts.

Even better, they offer transportation within 10 miles, which is a lifesaver. I learned they work with the Elderly Waiver, Alternative Care (AC), CADI, and VA benefits, which makes it affordable. They help seniors maintain their independence with Dignity, Grace, and Security.

The Transformation
After I completed the admission process for my mom, I started to feel like myself again. It has been a massive relief. The guilt is starting to fade, replaced by peace of mind knowing my mom is safe and happy with others.

When she returns from her day at Renaissance, she is calmer. She isn't shouting at me or acting aggressively. She enjoys the social interaction, and I get the space I need to focus on my work.

I feel a profound sense of ease. I can work, I can get my errands done, and I can take a break. The constant stress of wondering if she is safe at home is gone. I am no longer facing this alone. I am so grateful I finally made the decision to use this service. The program provides the social, cognitive, and physical stimulation she needs to maintain her quality of life.

I am finally getting my life back, and my mother is thriving.
